SRC Box Art
This project was for a Package Design class during middle of the pandemic, and unlike the Dominant Rum bottle project, this one required a bit more focus on the graphic design aspect of the class. The brief for this project was to take a product that has multiple variations and create a packaging line that reflects those differences, like a limited edition run on a collectable. The class was also permitted and even encouraged to create a theme and/or story around our chosen product. The product that I chose was 1/64 scale Hot Wheels cars with the theme of the packaging being a fictitious racing series that I dubbed “Super Rally Championship”.
The design for each of the boxes began with the locations that I choose for each stage of the titular Super Rally Championship or SRC. The stages are all extreme environments that are reminiscent of the Hot Wheels World Race and Acceleracers films and intend to trigger excitement in children and nostalgia within adult collectors. After choosing the locations I had to immediately find and purchase the appropriate cars for each region based off their design and liveries to have a unified color scheme. The posturized look of the artwork is based off vintage racing posters of World Rally Championship (WRC). In the end, there were five stages chosen, five cars paired to each, and five boxes printed and made by hand. The Ice Rally is paired with the Rip Rod, the Desert Rally with the Shock Factor, the Swamp Rally with Mountain Mauler, the Lava Rally with Slide Kick, and the Storm Rally with the Rally Finale.
